Labyrinth waterfalls from The Bruce Trail and Ontario’s north
My labyrinth style is inspired by the constant movement and interaction of the geographic elements within the landscape. It may be easy to observe water and clouds moving quickly but you need to look more closely to observe the land and rocks .I guess I am a geography geek in love with the bones of the land.
My style is unusual in that it abstracts that movement in shapes and patterns. Within the shapes, undulating labyrinth like lines describes the layers of rock, flow of water or density of clouds. Dramatic composition defines the image but the detail of entangled lines pulls you in for a closer look. I enjoy the challenge of working with complimentary colours and contrasting tones against each other setting up a buzz of one against the other.
Chutes Falls Diagonal Thrust — 36” x 36”, acrylic $2,600
Waterfalls are one of my favourite things to paint. Chutes Provincial park is a waterfall enthusiasts dream. It boasts a series called the Seven Sisters and this powerful falls cuts diagonally thru the resistent rock around it making for a dramatic composition and a mighty roar. Water never falls straight down so the labyrinth lines to and fro is perfectly suited.

Was Once Lost, Now Found, Haliburton Highlands —30” x 60” $3,600 SOLD
Although this is one of numerous waterfalls within Haliburton Highlands, this beauty was a little tricky to get to but well worth the visit. I discovered it by following the sound of running water off a logging raod while hiking one day. It had no trails to it so it felt lke a lost and magical place.

A stunning hike may be had just down from Balls Falls. A climb to the bottom of this beautiful valley offers a stunning hike between ancient Hemlock, pine and hardwoods alongside the multiple cascades of the twnty Mile Creek at any time of the year. This piece is based on a full flow in the spring.

Back to a favourite hiking area, Egan Chute Provincial Park , just outside of Bancroft Ontario, a favourite location for inspiration. This view offers swirling waters around a tenacious white pine filled island . I had fun balancing the centred image with the angles of the water and the clouds. Lots of movement here.

Quietly Carving It’s Own Path, Albion Falls — 36” x 48”, acrylic $3,200 SOLD
Albion Falls is certainly one of the jewels of Hamilton. Named the city of waterfalls, there is a lot of compettion but this beauty with it’s 19 metre classical casscade falling off the Niagara Escarpment , it is one of the most beautiful in the region. Five years ago it was still possible to access the bottom of the falls. This early morning scene finds the falls bathed in the cool blue shadow of that day

Although High Falls is one of the largest falls in Muskoka, if you follow a little path just beyond it you will find this beautiful contrast of water and rock . Well worth the visit. The palette is soft and quiet , much like the falls itself.

Topping Off Balls Falls — 36” x 48”, acrylic $3000
Located in Balls Falls Conservation Area the lovely Upper Balls Falls falls is just up river from the larger plunge falls located within the Historic site. It is unusual for the combination of primary plunge with multiple little falls part way down the rock face. It offers multiple compositions and thus one of my favourites to hike and paint.

Located in the southern tip of Algonquin Park, High Falls is a favourite hiking spot for me and my family. A J Casson also painted this beauty which is worthy of visiting at any season. September of course offers the bonus of fall colour.

Egan Chute Provincial Park offers some mighty fine hiking from both sides of the York river just outside of Bancroft ,Ontario . I’ve painted the falls itself numerous times but this lichen covered cliff just on the edge has acharm all of it’s own. A view offers wonderful patterns created by the colourful contrasts of fall trees, rock and water.

Meeting in the Middle, High Falls — 30” x 36”, acrylic $1,600
This study of cool tones on warm lime green ground play with the patterns of the tumbling waters of High Falls, Algonquin . This is a favourite hiking destination from the southern entrance of the park. It offers numerous waterfalls including cascades and an unusual slide formation.

Standing on the edge of this deep gorge of Canadian shield is humbling. The steep drop makes you respect the power of nature as the water rushes down, slowly continuing the slow wear of granite over time.

White Water Challenge, Hogs Falls 40” x 60” $4400. SOLD
In the heart of Ottawa you will find this waterfall with both attitude and history. Officially but rarely called Prince of Wales, Hogs Back is a powerful, artificially created waterfall, part of the creation of the Rideau canel. My father dove into the beast as a child so it is dedicated to him. My labyrinth lines are rounded and playful in the water but straight and rigged for the rock itself. Despite it’s resistance , the rock slowly succumbs.

This is a location I return to again and again. Not only is it close to my home, it offers an unusual composition of massive pieces of the Dolostone on a horizontal plane. In this piece I’ve combined the full flow of early spring with the light dappled tree tops of late spring forest . A combination of strength and serenity.

Ingliss Falls Patterns — 40” x 30”, acrylic $2,400
Situated just outsied Owen Sound , Ingliss Falls is certainly the most spectacular and most visited of the numerous ones in the area. It plunges 18 metres into a very deep valley. I was fortunate enough to get down there pre COVID and hence this end vantage point of the grand old lady. Cool tones make it a peaceful painting.

Waterfalls are places of refuge and healing for me. Water finds it’s way with such beauty, carving a path on it’s way to the ocean, an endless cleansing cycle. I used a softer palette in this piece,a much needed vibe in these troubling times. There are many High Falls in Ontario and throughout Canada and the world I suppose. This Muskoka treasure is found on the edge of the town of Bracebridge.

Calm and cool, this study in blue captures twilight at one of Ontario’s most popular Kawartha waterfalls. What it lacks in height it has in strength as the granite edges squeeze the rushing waters against a backdrop of classic white pines.

Light Filters Thru, Hilton Falls 24” x 48” acrylic $2000 SOLD
Located in Hilton Falls Conservation Area, this lovely waterfall is on a side trail off the main Bruce Trail. It usually has a bonfire burning in the opening just above. You can stop and warm yourself or a cup of hot chocolate. The water constantly drips from the overhanging rock face creating a magical fairy filled atmosphere?!?

Eugenia Falls Spring Flow 30” x 60” acrylic $3,500 SOLD
Eugenia Falls is one of Bruce County’s gems. It plunges 30 metres over the escarpment along the Bruce Trail. I had visited it in the fall but felt the pull to return in full spring flow. I was not disappointed and neither would you. This size of a waterfall deserves a large format to express its majesty.
