Land and Sky Labyrinth Landscapes

Victoria cottages on the edge of Algonquin Park and enjoys hiking and paddling the spaces of Ontario’s north, be it Muskoka, Algonquin, Haliburton, Kawartha, Madawaska or the length of Bruce Trail. The contrast of sky to rocky cliffs, grand pines and idyllic islands make for great inspiration. Her labyrinth style finds much inspiration here in the exposed rock of the Canadian Shield , the grand White Pines and wide open skies. Please join me on land or on water.

Sumacs Painted Embrace acrylic 30” x 60” $3600

Sumac is one of my favourite sources of colour in the fall. Its leaves are multi-hued and a perfect contrast to the bright blue skies of the cooling season. Like a big fuzzy sweater just in time for winter’s arrival.

Rhythm of Water And Land, Brier Island , Nova Scotia 24” x 48” acrylic $2300

I recently did an artist residency {Hammer and Sky} on Brier Island on the tip of Digby Arm, Nova Scotia. These volcanic rock formations on the southern shore of the Bay of Fundy were fascinating in their vertical structure and changed with the tides from hour to hour. The worn rock stretched its arms out into the ocean covered in a brilliant array of orange lichen making for wonderful compositions against the brilliant blue sky.

Meanwhile , The World Carries On 36” x 60” acrylic $4,200

A quiet but unsettling stillness settled over Halliburton and much of Canada and even the United States last summer as forest fires raged and smoke traveled thousands of kilometers away from its source. The rosy hues of the skies layered the forest and lakes and bid us beware. I came upon this small lake while driving the area and it’s beauty stood in stark contrast to its warning.

Into Your Arms, Algonquin, South Entrance 40” x 60’ acrylic $4400 SOLD

With Baited Breath I’ll Watch You Grow” 36” x 48” acrylic $3400

This idyllic, canoe view is from Benoir Lake in Haliburton on the edge of Algonquin Park. I love to paddle in early morning when the air and water is still and the far hills of the Haliburton Highlands surround you on all sides. This tenacious little spruce has me intrigued. It is growing out of an old white pine stump in the middle of a very marshy area. I was very happy to see it has survived another winter.

Running Wild acrylic $1,400

The grand white pines in this painting stand at the top of the lane to my cottage. Although fire has not actually crept that close this peice is a reflection of my concern for the wild spaces of our beautiful but vulnerable wild spaces.

Rifle Range Stone Wall, Bruce Trail 48”x 36” acrylic $3,200

This most pleasant and easily accessable section of the Bruce Trail suns thru downtown Hamilton. It is called the Rail Trail as it once provided a route thru the city .The escarpment towers over you on one side but the other is a section of solid stone, a break and a hand built section which seems so odd. History reveals this a part of a wall erected to protect the trains that once ran thru there from the rifle range that once lay below this section as a training place for World War II. Now a small lookout over the forest below that is particularily beautiful in the fall.

Algonquin Glow 15” x 30” $875

Any little slice of Algonquin Park looks good to me, especially touched by the brillant colours of an evening sunset. I ventured out one evening as is my habit. The sky was lovely but not anything special but as I headed in the waters around me lit up in spectacular coral and aqua. A truly memorable evening and a reminder to not be in too much of a hurray..

Rhythmn of Rock and Water 48” x 24” acrylic $2300

Standing on a cliff overlooking Big Cove , Brier Island , Nova Scotia was exhilarating. The crashing waves dashed against the volcanic rock piullars and invited you to breathe deeply. I spent two weeks in June at Hammer and Sky artist retreat this summer and loved every minute. My mind will return to that wonderous place many times for inspiration.

Hiking Yerenko Ridley On A Misty Morning 24” x 24” acrylic $1150

I Can’t Get You Out Of MY Mind acrylic 36” x 48” $3600

My early morning paddles in Haliburton on the edge of Algonquin Park offers a slowly changing venue of delights to start my day. I’ve watched this spit of land slowly collapse as waves and motor boat traffic wear the sandy shore away. The opening here offers a beautiful frame for the hills of the highlands seen in the distance. The choice of cool tones offers a calming sense much like the scene itself.

The vistas from Lions Head trail along the Bruce Peninsula Provincial Park are absolutely exhilarating . Killarney Provincial Park is one of my favourite spots for hiking and inspiration. Fires Burning, Fires Burning, Draw Nearer , Draw Nearer 36” x 36” $2600

winner of first place in Burlington Fine Arts Artists Mark Juried Show

The forest fires that have spread out of control across parts of Canada has been alarming to us all. The once innocent pastime of a camping or cottage campfire takes on new challenge and meaning to many of us. The once playful camp song sung with my Girl Guide group takes on a menacing tone. We fear the drawing nearer of those oh so destructive foresat fires or the smoke they spread over thousands of miles. The forest in this painting is on my cottage properety on the edge of Algonquin Park wher the smoke was so evident last year.

Spring Hues of Rattlesnake Point 15” x 30” $875

I’ve hiked Rattlesnake Point many times as a teenager, a young Brownie leader and now as a landscape artist I enjoy revisting its wondeful rock formations, wide vistas and ancient trees. Some of the cedars that cling to the cliff edge are said to be 800 years old. If only they could tell their storys. The edge of spring offers a soft palette as the snow receeds and the fields below start to show their spring greens.

White Pine on Granite 32 x 47 $2,800.jpg

White Pines on Granite 32” x 47” acrylic $2,800 SOLD

Much of Ontario is built on the Canadian Shield, the largest mass of Precambrain rock on the face of the earth. It is especially evident in cottage country where the glaciers have scraped and smoothed it over the ages. This piece celebrates the hardy existence of the White Pine, that manages to find a foothold in the cracks and fissures of the granite of Canada’s ancient bones. This piece is based on Big Bald Lake in the Kawartha region but could be found in many areas.
